Jax’s UK Football Journey: A Special Meeting with Hugh McAuley in Manchester

Jax’s incredible UK football journey has continued in Manchester, with another very special experience to add to what has already been an unforgettable 14-day football tour.

After beginning his UK adventure in London and experiencing an amazing first day at West Ham United, Jax and his fellow Australian players have now travelled to Manchester for the next stage of their football journey.

And while in Trafford, Jax had the opportunity to meet a man who has spent decades helping young footballers develop their game — former Liverpool FC player and highly respected youth coach Hugh McAuley.

Jax Meets Hugh McAuley

For Jax, having a photograph taken with Hugh McAuley is a wonderful memory from the tour.

But when you look at McAuley’s history in youth football, the significance of the meeting becomes even more special.

McAuley spent many years working within Liverpool FC’s youth development system, helping nurture some of the young players who would eventually become household names in English football.

Liverpool FC records that McAuley first coached Steven Gerrard when Gerrard was just eight years old.

McAuley also worked with a generation of Liverpool youngsters that included Michael Owen, Jamie Carragher and Robbie Fowler.

Gerrard has subsequently spoken about the role McAuley played in helping him progress from a young boy at Liverpool’s Academy to the highest level of the game.

A Lifetime Developing Young Footballers

Perhaps what makes this meeting particularly relevant to Jax’s journey is McAuley’s philosophy towards developing young players.

The Hugh McAuley Football Academy encourages young footballers to express themselves, make their own decisions and enjoy playing without being afraid of making mistakes.

It is a philosophy built around developing the individual player rather than simply focusing on results.

For a young footballer like Jax, travelling halfway around the world to experience different coaches, training methods and football environments is exactly what this tour is all about.

The Australian Touring Squad in Manchester

The second photograph from the day captures another great memory — the Australian touring squad together during the Manchester leg of the tour.

And there is Jax in the front row, second from the right.

Only days earlier, Jax had been selected as captain and given the honour of leading the touring group out at West Ham United’s home ground.

Now the journey has moved on to Manchester, bringing another training environment, another football experience and another opportunity to learn.

From the Gold Coast to England

It is quite a journey for a young footballer who normally spends his weekends playing junior soccer back home on the Gold Coast.

Jax’s story is also one of the reasons we love following junior football at Alpha Skins.

As an Australian-owned, Gold Coast-based brand creating washable, slip-on shin guards for junior soccer players, grassroots football and the development of young players are very much part of our story.

We’ll continue following Jax throughout his 14-day UK football adventure.
